Abstract
Spurred by recent experimental advances, theoretical/computational methods for accurately determining the electronic structure and properties of surfaces and interfaces have been developed. This paper reviews the advanced state of local spin density determinations of the magnetic properties of free surfaces (e.g. Ni and Fe) and interfaces (e.g. Ni on Cu), using self-consistent spin-polarized energy band calculations of the energy dispersion and spatial character of surface and interface states.
