Abstract

On 10 February 2021, Science Advances published the Research Article "A methylotrophic origin of methanogenesis and early divergence of anaerobic multicarbon alkane metabolism" by Y. Wang, G. Wegener, T. A. Williams, R. Xie, J. Hou, F. Wang and X. Xiao (1). Following the publication of this paper, readers notified Science Advances that some of the data used in this paper belong to other scientists and not to the authors of this paper. They further noted that data was included in the manuscript without approval or acknowledgement of the other scientists or disclosing it to Science Advances. This is a serious breach of scientific ethics. Science Advances is publishing this Editorial Expression of Concern to alert our readers to this breach of scientific ethics. We are working with the authors on a retraction.
