Abstract

In the paper “Centroid moment tensor solutions of deep earthquakes predating the digital era: The historical dataset (1907–1961)”, by W.-C. Huang, E.A. Okal, G. Ekström, and M.P. Salganik (Huang et al., 1998), a clerical error in the production of Fig. 1 has resulted in the wrong “beachball” focal mechanisms being presented for Events 221–235, making them incompatible with the data listed in Tables 1 and 2. The correct version of Fig. 1 is reproduced below. These remarks do not affect the data presented in Tables 1 and 2, which list the correct Centroid Moment Tensor parameters for all 35 events, nor the discussion of our results in Huang and Okal (1998), which was based on those parameters; the individual best-double-couple beachballs plotted on Figs. 1 and 3–7 of Huang and Okal (1998) are correct. We regret any inconvenience to the readership.
