Evaluation of fracture processes in cement-based materials under compression using computer vision

Abstract

The heterogeneous nature of concrete requires a robust deformation measuring method to obtain a reliable information about the failure process of concrete. A non-destructive displacement evaluation system utilizing a image correlation scheme, often called computer vision, is developed to examined fracture process in cement-based materials. The technique is a full-field measuring method which gives an accuracy within the micron range. Displacement arrow diagrams or displacement contour maps reveal highly nonuniform deformations even at the early loading stages. The laboratory study shows that the technique has a potential for field application.
