Abstract

The excess attenuation near the pair-breaking edge in **3He-B observed by Mast et al. is shown to arise from quasiparticle collision broadening of the squashing mode. Woelfle's pair-correlated Fermi liquid theory has been used to verify this explanation. Although the attenuation profile may be broadened near the energy gap edge, the phase velocity signature remains sharp.
