Abstract
This article builds upon Lev Manovich’s useful taxonomy of recent techniques of information visualization aligned with cultural research—what he calls “culturevis”—in order to sketch the domain of an incipient “cultureson” and consider some implications of recent visualizations of sound culture. Examples include several types of auditory display and sonification, the eduction of visual inscriptions of sound phenomena by members of the First Sounds organization, mashup remixes, and “musical intelligence” software.
