Abstract
PACS are designed to work with images that have been produced within the enterprise. But hospitals do not operate in a vacuum. We need to be able to share images between nonaffiliated care centers to optimize clinical care and to support the research mission. Some institutions use their main PACS to store outside imaging studies, while others sequester them into a separate storage system. In some areas, regional shared storage space is a jointly supported resource between care systems.
