Abstract
The behavior of composite sandwich structures are analyzed and simple models to explain this behavior as a function of material, geometric and loading parameters are developed. The analysis consists of the mechanical characterization of the sandwich constituent materials, composite facings, honeycomb or foam cores, and adhesive layers; fabrication and testing of sandwich beams in pure bending; identification and recording of failure mechanisms direct observation and nondestructive evaluation; and comparison of observed deformation and failure behavior with analytical predictions.
