Abstract
Management of fl uids, blood products, and electrolytes in infants and children requires special attention to detail and constant vigilance. While the kidneys and neuroendocrine systems are responsible for fl uid and electrolyte homeostasis, they are not fully developed at birth. Fluid compartment volumes throughout the body vary with age as well. As such, management of fl uid resuscitation changes throughout infancy and childhood. In term infants, 17 percent will urinate in the delivery room and 90 percent will urinate in the first 24 hours.
