Fluorescent imaging of the vortex core in the rabbit heart

Abstract

Ventricular tachycardia in normal rabbit heart is sustained by vortices with a linear core 9-mm or more in length. Thus, an area of 1 cm in cross section is required to sustain a single vortex. This offers a possible explanation of the lack of sustained fibrillation in young rabbit hearts, because the hearts are around 1-2 cm.
