Abstract
An estimated damping ratio has been obtained on-line and used to identify the machining process and subsequently to predict its stability and maintain chatter free machining conditions. Discrete autoregressive models have been implemented, which feature the modal decomposition of the system's dynamics along with the modal contributions yielding the modes susceptible to chatter. The theoretically proposed strategy has been experimentally verified while turning a slender bar on a turret lathe. The on-line identification, forecasting, and the decision process have been carried out using a general purpose microcomputer.
