Natural micronized progesterone is not effective, if taken orally. The duration of luteal phase support in stimulated IVF cycles does not appear to be mandatory beyond the day of a positive hCG test (451). Funding Information: Progress was also hindered by the sheer scientific difficulty of IVF. Edwards himself had first described the technique in 1969 (635) and throughout the succeeding decade continued to report experiments in sperm capacitation and oocyte maturation from his Cambridge laboratory. This challenging work was also undertaken without specific funding as Britain's Medical Research Council turned down Edwards's first grant application in 1971 (636) .
