Abstract

Applications of fracture mechanisms to concrete are summarized. Topics reviewed include toughening in the fracture process zone, cohesive and modified Griffith crack models, the R-curve approach, the determination of material fracture parameters, size effect and brittleness. It is shown that fracture mechanisms approaches can be used in practice, for example, to analyze the diagonal shear failure of beams.
