Gastrointestinal cancers and stomas

Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to provide an overview of gastrointestinal (GI) cancers, including impact on psychological well-being and quality of life and current treatment strategies. The chapter also outlines the financial impact of cancer, a concept known as ‘financial toxicity’. A second aim of this chapter is to provide an introduction to stomas, including their role in cancer and other disease management. Patient experience of living with a stoma is also explored. Practical recommendations for helping patients manage these issues are provided.
