Abstract

The relationship between electronic and geometrical structure is examined for the series Pd(XY), where XY = P2, PS, and S2. Population of high-energy orbitals of the parent three-dimensional PdP2 structure, antibonding between the nonmetal atoms, leads to a gradual breakup of this arrangement with increasing electron count.
