Abstract

Communication involves more than just spoken language. Gestures, which are meaningful hand movements, play a key role in communication across development. Here we begin by discussing the time course of gesture production and comprehension in typically developing children. We then outline how gesture plays a critical role in learning and conceptual change. Finally, we consider gesture’s role in the development of special populations of learners with impaired verbal communication. Taken together, this review draws attention to the importance of considering non-verbal cues in communication and learning across development.
