Abstract
Gadolinium/tungsten multilayers have been fabricated by magnetron sputtering and investigated by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and magnetometry. Electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction reveal an excellent multilayer structure with little interdiffusion at the interfaces. A very large enhancement of the saturation magnetisation at low temperature is observed for specimens with thin gadolinium layers. This is attributed to the development of a magnetic moment in the tungsten layers.
