Abstract

The finite- element method is used to analyze the problem of steady- state gravity flow to excavations and drainage trenches in layered aquifers. Dimensionless flow quantities and information on the location of the phreatic surface are presented as functions of the relative material permeabilities and the geometric configuration of the soil profile and excavation size or drainage trench position. These results are applied to an example problem to select a satisfactory configuration of subsurface drains for an actual depressed high way profile.
