Abstract
Dynamic traffic grooming with wavelength add-drop multiplexers (WADM) in unidirectional synchronous optical networks (SONET) is studied. In particular, an approach is presented to allocate ADMs so that the resulting network can handle any traffic pattern out of a given class. An algorithm is provided which allows for significant reduction of the required number of ADMs. In addition, the use of a hubbed architecture or tunable lasers to further reduce the required number of ADMS is discussed.
