workers postulated. Thus HHV-6 infection may cause specific pathogenic disease in immunosuppressed BMT recipients, which has implications for both virological diagnosis and clinical management. We support Michel and colleagues’ view that not only is diagnostic skin biopsy of value in the post-BMT period (as Vermeer and colleagues suggested3), but that attention should be focused on virological assessment of the diagnostic tissue. Our findings, and those of Michel et al, emphasise that a thorough clinical assessment of BMT patients developing an unexplained rash post-transplant should include not only a diagnostic skin biopsy but also full virological analysis of the biopsy tissue.
