Bamboo Ridge is a promising new title best classified in the little magazine category. It features Hawaiian poets and authors and is supported in part by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts. Bamboo Ridge pubfishes works by Asian-Americans as well as local Hawaiian writers. Hawaii's respected author, Maxine Hong Kingston, is a major contributor. Although the quality is not yet as consistent as the Hawaii Review, Bamboo Ridge received considerable local interest and is recommended for collections with ethnic and Asian emphases. moting the arts in Hawaii. These newsletters contain about ten pages of news and announcements about all types of events such as plays, music, art exhibits, flower shows, etc. The Cultural Climate is part of the Arts Council of Hawaii's public education program. It is designed for art enthusiasts as well as the general public. News of upcoming competitions and grants is also included. A "Monthly Forecast" calender which lists up to 100 events is a major feature. Humanities News follows the same format and is somewhat more modest. It includes feature articles on specific cultures, biographies of prominent local artists, and some book reviews. Humanities News is partially funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities and regularly reports on successful projects and grants. Both keep track of activities throughout the state. sored in part by the University of Hawaii's Sea Grant College Marine Advisory Program. Both are well-printed newsletters and issues carry about four to eight pages of marine-related information. Hawai'i Coastal Zone News confines itself to water conditions and sports, tides, development plans, and other coastal zone management matters. Makai deals with Hawaii's marine life and its articles deal with such topics as "Sharks in Hawaii" and the fishing industry. Both are well edited and provide good overviews of current marine research activities in Hawaii.
