Basic electrophysiology: Since the early days of NASPE/HRS, its leadership has recognized the vital importance of basic and translational cardiac electrophysiology research. Society leadership has consistently incorporated information on basic science advances into the annual scientific sessions, educational curriculum, and society journals. Dr Zipes’ insistence, in his role as an early society leader and as the first Heart Rhythm editor, that basic science be recognized as the foundation for advances in clinical practice created a sense of the need for multidisciplinary inclusion. That recognition resulted in Heart Rhythm becoming a favorite source for manuscript submission by several generations of clinical and basic cardiac arrhythmia scientists across the globe. These activities led to the recognition of cardiac arrhythmia and electrophysiology research by the National Institutes of Health, which established a review panel (Electric Signaling, Ion Transport and Arrhythmias study section) considering grants submitted in the arrhythmia field for funding by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.
