High bandwidth, ultra-low power AU optical modulation with a nano-fiber embedded in Rb vapor

Abstract

We report all-optical modulation at 2 GHz with 19 atto-joules, using a tapered nano-fiber embedded in Rb vapor. The switching energy is a record low value for modulation at this speed, requiring only 75 photons.
