The market leader in plagiarism detection software in the United States is iThenticate.8 Prepared materials from the company note that it offers for comparison over “62 billion current and archived web pages; 80% of the top 5000 research journals; 160 million content items comprised of over 92 million published works from journals, periodicals, magazines, encyclopedias, and abstracts; 37 million scholarly articles, books, and conference proceedings from 70,000 scientific, technical, and medical publications; 630,000 theses and dissertations dating back to 2008; and over 700 million student papers globally.”8 Government and granting agencies, including the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, are iThenticate clients. Depending on the contractual terms, investigators who are on faculty at participating institutions or submitting works to participating publishers may be able to have their work assessed for a discounted rate per article. Articles are run through the software and assessed based on preset thresholds of similarity selected by the user.
