Abstract
Hyperfine interactions at nuclei of 5d transition ions have been studied by means of spin-unrestricted Hartree-Fock (SUHF) calculations. For the divalent ions Hf2+ through Pt2+, the core polarization field per unpaired spin is constant to within 9%, varying from -700 to -760 kG. Comparison is made with the few NMR, EPR, and Mössbauer experiments available to date. Fair agreement is found between theory and experiment, indicating the need for more experiments and additional information about relativistic contributions to the hyperfine interaction.
