Abstract

To the Editor: In the August 26 issue of the Journal, Drs. Taubin and Landsberg state that the differentiation between Neisseria gonorrhoeae and N. meningitidis “… depends on the ability of the gonococcus to ferment glucose.” This is incorrect. Both organisms ferment glucose. The differentiation is based on maltose fermentation. The meningococcus ferments it; the gonococcus does not.
