Abstract

The stability of symmetrically and linearly tapered columns made of elastic-plastic materials and subjected to combined bending and axial loads is investigated. Approximate interaction equations are derived for cantilever columns. Equations are used to determine the load carrying capacity of simply supported columns subjected to arbitrary end loading conditions. Column curves for A 36 steel are prepared. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the use of the approximate interaction equations as well as the curves.
