The Division of Materials Science, Office of Fossil Energy, and the Office of Industrial Technologies of the US Department of Energy gave financial support which allowed the organizers to waive the registration fees and provide financial assistance to some of the invited speakers and students. The organizers also received very generous financial support from Philip Morris USA and the money was used to provide three awards to the student posters and three awards were given to the scientists. Their support also allowed publication of this volume. We also received financial support from Japan and we appreciate the leadership of Professor Masaharu Yamaguchi in this regard. The symposium was sponsored by the Materials Science Critical Technology Sector of ASM International, and the Mechanical Behavior Materials Committee of Structural Materials Division of TMS.
