While their acceptance into the profession was late, Latin American women physicians made strong contributions quickly. The American Association of University Women, formed in 1881, empowered Latin American women to attend international conferences and join global organizations through grant scholarship and support. 5 Female physicians from Argentina and Uruguay contributed to the formation of the Medical Women's International Association after participating in the 1919 International Conference of Women Physicians in New York.
