Abstract

Congo Square, an open space in New Orleans, becomes an area for enslaved Africans to freely sing, dance, and play music. William Alexander Brown opens in New York City the African Grove Theatre, the first African American theatre in the United States. In 1823 it produces Brown’s The Drama of King Shotaway. Juanita Hall becomes the first African American to win the Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical in South Pacific. Chuck Davis, one of the foremost masters of African dance, establishes the annual DanceAfrica festival at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Trazana Beverley becomes the first African American to win the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play for for colored girls.
