Abstract

The microstructural cation arrangements in trivalent beta″ aluminas have been studied by High Resolution TEM. All samples were found to show considerable structural inhomogeneity. A long-range ordered structure with a 3×3×3 superstructure was found in Nd, Gd and Eu samples. Models of the ion distribution in the planes suggest occupation of both BR and m0 sites. A second apparently "disordered" structure type was also observed in all samples. The ratio of the ordered to disordered structure increased in the order Nd>Eu>Gd. We suggest that thermal treatments are important in determining the structure of these materials.
