Abstract

KSM, a rule- and fact-based program for representing and using musical knowledge, is described. An overview of the production system formalism for knowledge representation is given, followed by some observations on the applicability of this formalism to musical tasks. The organization and-facilities of KSM are described; a sample application written with the system is considered. Strengths and limitations of the formalism and of the program itself are examined, along with directions for future work.
