Abstract
Protoporphyrin induces loose coupling in rat liver mitochondria at concentrations probably encountered in porphyric patients. Features of porphyric crises suggesting acute mitochondrial dysfunction are reviewed. Porphyrins which accumulate behind enzymatic blocks may produce crises by secondarily altering mitochondrial respiration.
