Abstract

The child with cutaneous papules and nodules presents a diagnostic challenge in the course of pediatric or dermatologic practice. Many lumps and bumps are unique to childhood. Both congenital and acquired lesions, whether solitary or multiple, can be self-resolving. Recognition of these lesions can avert unnecessary biopsies or excisions and provide reassurance for the parents. Several new papular eruptions have been described in recent years. Cutaneous papules in childhood can be the presenting sign of an underlying genetic disease. This monograph reviews some of the common and less common cutaneous lumps and bumps encountered in the pediatric population. Clinical clues to aid in diagnosis and updates on pathogenesis and therapy are provided. A review of genodermatoses that are seen in childhood with cutaneous papules and nodules is also included.
