Abstract

The present state of the art of theoretical studies of magnetism in artificial ("man made") materials is presented by means of some illustrative examples on low dimensional systems, e.g., free transition metal surfaces, adsorbed overlayers on noble metals and on magnetic or non-magnetic transition metal substrates and induced surface and interface magnetism in transition metals not magnetic in the bulk.
