Abstract

Close to 8.7% of patients undergoing a breast reduction surgery will experience a complication. Skin necrosis, nipple-areolar complex necrosis, and fat necrosis are uncommon complications after reduction mammaplasty but can significantly impact morbidity as well as outcomes, thus negatively affecting patient satisfaction. Identifying risk factors, being familiar to a wide variety of surgical techniques for planning, and close observation to signs of ischemia and healing difficulties will help the surgeon to opportunely manage these complications. New diagnostic and therapeutic approaches have become available. Some of these with supportive data in other types of surgery have slowly made an entry into breast surgery and breast reduction surgery.
