Mechanical properties of cast Ti-6AI-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo lattice block structures

Abstract

A study was conducted to describe the mechanical properties of investment-cast Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo (Ti-6242) LBS panels at ambient and elevated temperatures. This alloy was selected for investigations, as it exhibited improved stiffness and strength at ambient temperature, as compared to Ti-64 and improved microstructural stability and mechanical strength upto 565°C while remaining stable. The Ti-6242 LBS panels were investment-cast in vacuum, using the lost-wax approach. These panels were processed according to standard aerospace-grade titanium casting procedures after casting. Hot isostatic pressing (HIP) was performed on these panels at 900°C for 2 hours under a pressure of 103 MPa and it was followed by chemical milling to remove the a-case.
