Abstract
The Islamic Republic of Mauritania has the dubious distinction of being one of the few countries in the world where traditional forms of slavery persist despite repeated attempts to eradicate them. But little is known about the anti-slavery social movement formed in Mauritania in the late 1970s by activists of servile origin. This article seeks to fill this gap by tracing the chaotic trajectory of this movement, focusing on the successive transformations of its modes of action. We will focus on the Haratin movement, studying the forms of organization that it has adopted, the modes of action that it implements, and the outlets of its activism.
