Abstract

A stochastic neuro-musculoskeletal patello/femoral model was developed to examine the mechanics of reflex action elicited by valgus positional stimuli at the knee. This reflex action was shown to originate from periarticular tissue afferents. Model simulations that the activation patterns mediated by these afferents resulted in an optimal muscle combination to resist the externally applied abduction load at the knee. These findings provide further evidence on the neurosensory role of the joint's passive tissue in maintaining joint stability.
