Abstract

Early transition metal carbides and nitrides are an intriguing class of materials that hold promise for use in a number of catalytic and electrocatalytic reactions. Advances in the areas of synthesis, and catalytic and electrocatalytic performance during the last 10-15 years have been impressive and are reviewed in this chapter. Despite these advances, there are no significant commercial applications for carbide- and nitride-based catalysts. This review concludes with a perspective regarding issues that might facilitate their commercial application.
