Nd:Yag laser treatment of recurrent erosion

Abstract

Purpose. To review clinical results of Nd:YAG laser treatment for recurrent erosion. Methods. Retrospective review of 18 patients with recurrent erosion treated with Nd:YAG laser with multiple (average = 158) low energy (0. 4 - 0. 5 mJ> applications. Results. The average age of the patients was 47 with equal distribution of men and women. There were 11 right eyes and 7 left eyes involved. 11/18 cases were preceded by trauma. The average duration of symptoms prior to treatment was 37 months. 33% of eyes required retreatment. The average follow-up was 13. 2 months. 100% of patients had reduced symptomatology and 5/18 had no symptoms post-laser. The average improvement in symptomatology as subjectively reported by the patients was 3. 6 on a scale of 1 (no improvement) to 5 (complete resolution of symptoms). Conclusions. Nd: YAG laser treatment of recurrent erosion represents a simple highly effective technique with high patient satisfaction.
