Near-field analysis of beam properties of InGaAs ridge lasers

Abstract

A high power strained (In,Ga)As graded-index separate confinement heterojunction (GRIN-SCH) laser diodes designed to pump Erbium doped fiber amplifiers was studied. A direct method for measuring the beam propagation and waveguiding properties of this laser was demonstrated. Beam waist and astigmatism measurements in the near-field and at multiple points along the optical axis outside the laser cavity by imaging the beam from the laser facet are made. In the near-field, spatial shifts in the location of the lateral position of the mode are also measured for multiple spectral features.
