Abstract

A new chalcogenide crystal, K2Hg3Ge2S8 (KHGS), is investigated for nonlinear optical applications. Extensive covalent bonding between Ge, S and Hg atoms led to large optical nonlinearities. The ionic interaction with the K atoms provided superior mechanical integrity without compromising the nonlinear optical response. The frequency conversion characteristics of KHGS in the MWIR from second harmonic generation (SHG). The variation in the SHG signal for KHGS along each phase-matching locus is also discussed.
