Abstract

Noise generated by construction blasting differs from other construction noise because of its frequency content. The audible high frequency portion is accompanied by a non audible, lower frequency portion that excites structures and in turn causes a secondary and audible rattle within a structure. Blasting noise occurs only a few times a day and lasts only one second or less. Since blasting is not continuous, human response cannot be extrapolated easily from studies of continuous sources such as traffic. The characteristics of blasting noise as well as its effects on structures and humans are presented. The variation of measurement systems and the influence of weather on propagation relations is also discussed.
