Abstract
This chapter summarizes why nondestructive evaluation (NDE) is important in the aerospace industry, and then reviews both classical and emerging NDE techniques. Classical techniques presented include visual, penetrant testing, magnetic particle, eddy current, ultrasonic, and x‐ray. The emerging techniques discussed include thermal imaging, laser based optical, terahertz, microwave, millimeter‐wave, and real‐time ultrasonic imaging. The strengths, limitations, flaw detectability, and typical aerospace applications of the techniques are discussed.
