Abstract
Quantitative measurements of the nonlinear refractive index coefficient (n2 and the third-order nonlinear susceptibility (χ(3)) for a solution of 7',7'-dicyano-7'-apo-β-carotene (DCAC) in hexane have been measured at different concentrations. The measurements have been performed by both the self-trapping and self-phase modulation techniques using a cw Ar+ laser. The results show that DCAC has a relatively large nonlinearity, attributed to a thermal mechanism, with n2 of the order of 109 times that of CS2.
