This review summarizes the basic physics that govern the nuclear processing of matter at the neutron star surface. Specifically, attention is focused on the conditions for which the accretion of matter is explosive and the various nuclear burning regimes are discussed in detail. Observational facts are briefly summarized and the nature of x-ray and gamma-ray burst sources is described. The review includes a discussion of the physics and the basic character of the nuclear burning development. The results of model calculations are briefly reviewed and compared with the observational data.
