Abstract

Obesity is on course to become the most significant public health crisis of the 21st century. Affecting adults and children with alarming proportion, obesity will require groundbreaking and interdisciplinary strategies to effect change and to improve health outcomes across the nation. The cornerstone of weight management today is lifestyle modification, an approach that includes reduced energy intake, increased energy expenditure, and behavioral treatment, referred to as standard behavioral treatment. Incorporating physical activity in treatment for weight loss and maintenance is essential for successful outcomes. While we have made significant progress, based on the most recent literature, innovative behavioral interventions to improve eating habits, physical activity, and sleep hygiene of adults may contribute to an improvement in obesity incidence and prevalence. As a second-level treatment, pharmacotherapy and bariatric surgery have the potential to aid those with severe obesity to make positive changes toward the development of healthful eating behaviors.
