Abstract

The ultimate bearing capacity of a general type of rigid foundation, supported by a weightless soil which exhibits both cohesion and internal friction, is found by integrating the Kötter equations. Several particular cases, including both smooth and rough interface conditions and the case of an embedded rough foundation, are considered, and values of the bearing capacity factors Nc and Nq as a function of φ are given in equation and graphical form. Certain special cases of the resulting solutions are shown to be consistent with various commonly used expressions.
