On the lifetime of a metastable state at low noise

Abstract

The mean lifetime of a metastable state of a dynamical system driven by small noise is calculated. The vector field of the dynamical system which need not be deriveble from a potential, is assumed to have a vanishing normal component on the boundary of the domain of attraction of the metastable state.
